Techniques For Memory Improvement
Improving your memory requires quite a bit of effort. It is important to exercise your memory constantly through intellectually stimulating activities to improve your retrieval capacity. Techniques for memory improvement are usually referred to as mnemonics. They help us to recall information that would otherwise be difficult to recall.
This is usually done by encoding information so that it is easier to remember. When coming up with mnemonics one can include sound, taste, smell, touch and feelings.
Mnemonics are created based on three principles namely imagination association and location. Imagination is very important when it comes to techniques for memory improvement. A strong imagination helps to visualize situations so that they are imprinted in our memories and can easily be recalled later. With imagination, it can be as wild as you like since there are no limitations. In fact, the wilder your imagination, the better for your memory.
Association is one of the main techniques for memory improvement. It refers to the process of linking something that you need to remember to another thing that is easy to remember. This may be done by linking items using similarities in shape, color, smell or even feeling.
Location is where two pieces of information are placed in context. For example one memory can be set in a town while another is set in a city. This sufficiently separates the two ideas to avoid confusion. The atmosphere of these locations may be used to give more character to the memory.
Techniques:
Chunking is one of the main techniques for memory improvement. Ideally, you divide the information to be memorized into groups. This method is most useful when the order of items does not matter. It works very well when memorizing numbers with lots of digits such as telephone or ID numbers. Numbers can be divided into group of twos or threes, whatever works for you.
Images are easier to remember than any other type of information. Coding information using images makes it easier to recall when you need it. The first trick to coming up with effective images is to use pleasant rather than unpleasant images. The brain is also more likely to remember colorful images rather than dull ones. Funny and rude images are very hard to forget. The most important things should appear larger in the mental image.
Rhyming is also one of the main methods of memory improvement. One of the most popular rhymes goes like, “Thirty days hath September…..” This rhyme has been very useful to most of us when it comes to remembering how many days are in a certain month. As earlier mentioned, rude rhymes are always easier to remember!
Another technique for memory improvement is bridging. This technique involves mediating between two ideas. It calls for the individual to use their imagination in coming up with creative ways to build a bridge between two ideas.
The use of acronyms as a memorization technique involves using the first letter of every sentence or phrase to form a new word. We have all used this technique before. However, while this technique will help you to remember the various ideas or phrases, it won’t help you understand them. Also, this technique may not work with all kinds of information. Some pieces of information when converted into acronyms will sound like gibberish and may be harder to remember.
When using all the above techniques, it is important to keep repeating the acronyms, rhymes, chunks and bridges until you can remember them without any difficulty. Also practice the methods over and over again until they become like old habits. Remember, practice makes perfect.
